About five years ago I toddled over to Zaphod Beeblebrox on a Thursday to catch the ever-entertaining Ted Leo. Also on hand were New Brunswick, New Jersey's Screaming Females. Although they were on the cusp of releasing their fourth album, Castle Talk. I recall reviewing and enjoying the album for pennyblackmusic.com, but I'm not sure if that was before or after the gig. The band has kept on touring and releasing, and haven't lost any steps - album No. 6, Rose Mountain, has just hit the streets, and naturally the band has returned to rock the folks at House of Targ, alongside New Yorkers Mitski and Ottawa's Decathlete.
Here's some post-punk action from Andrew Grosvenor and Peter Zachar.
Peter hits!
Phonic action!
Blueish action!
Athletic action!
Extra Peter!
And so on!
Bass action!
Olympian action!
I was unfamiliar with Mitski. She's received some acclaim for her emotionally fraught, sometimes punkish sounds. Her music made me think of early Cat Power.
Maggie works the frets.
Kat hits!
Mitski sings!
Rhythmic action!
The shouty bit!
Extra Kat!
Extra Maggie!
Closeup action!
The whole lot!
She did a couple of tunes solo at the end.
It was all an ideal warmup for the heavy sounds of Screaming Females, who once again ripped it up live. Here's guitarist Marissa Paternoster.
Rhhythm section action with Jarrett and Mike!
Shredding action!
The shouty bit!
More Marissa!
More Jarrett and Mike!
Jarrett hits!
Hair-tossing action!
Rickenbacker action!
Extra Jarrett!
Marissa bends!
And so on!
Audience reaction action!
Feedback action!
A hot night.
