Back in July I went to the House of Targ to check out C'mon frontman Ian Blurton's new band, Public Animal, and was duly blown away. When I heard they were returning to town for a show at the Dominion Tavern I naturally decided to go see them again, along with local lights Big Dick and Mass, a band with a bunch of local expats now stationed in Toronto.
Mass took the stage first. The band features local scene vets Mike Laderoute (Robot Kill City, Van Johnson) and Steve Lam (Black Actors). Here he is at right, with bassist Mark.
Ex-Black Actor Steve Lam and Andrew Butko (of Disgruntled, Van Johnson and others - though the only time he's appeared on the blog has been playing guitar in Nick Gaetano's country combo).
Andrew hits!
Mark sings!
Mike sings!
Extra Steve!
Rhythm section action!
More Mike!
The whole lot!
A fine exhibition .. then it was on to some former bandmates, Big Dick ...
Last time I saw Big Dick play at The Dominion, they were unleashing their new LP and Dave Secretary had a heap of stitches in his leg and a punch of pushing and shoving brought the set to a premature close. This time around the only (non-musical) excitement was when a cymbal stand fell over.
Dave sings!
Johnny sings!
The view from the other side of the stage!
Cymbal re-elevation action!
Extra Dave!
More Johnny!
A fine performance as usual. On to Public Animal. Once again they put on a great set, though the crowd was a bit more sedate than the folks at the House of Targ. Here's Sir Ian and another Ottawa expat, Eric Larock (TBWNIAS, Klovenhoofs, Tricky Woo, etc.)
Mid-song tuning action!
Ryan hits!
Extra Ian!
Rhythm section action!
Caitlin sings!
Organ action!
Bass-lifting action!
It all went well until some over-enthused audience member decided to toss himself into the audience, then into the stage-left-PA speaker, knocking it over and out.
