I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas; now it's time to gear up for the New year's Eve shows, and where better to get a little practice than at the House of Targ? Criminally under-recorded Torontonians First Base finally headed into the studio (with Targ supremo Yogi) to lay down the tracks for their debut long-player earlier this year. It was released in October on Hozac, and they returned to the Meatlocker for some album-release action with some locals and local exiles.
First up, a mystery band ... who turned out to be Average Times! They're also playing at Babylon's Dark & Stormy night a week from now.
Curtis frets!
Seiji sings!
The bands' performance space stretched out into the back, so drummer photos will be few and distant this post ...
Singalong action!
Rhythm section action!
The whole lo!
The shouty bit!
Nervous System, Voicemail and First Base after the jump ...
The various members of Nervous System have scattered to the wind since I last saw them four years ago - if memory serves, Matt Oxley is in Montreal now, and Matthew Cosgrove is down in T.O. - and they were high on the list of bands I didn't expect to play again, but here they were, back for Christmas time no doubt. "I think that was all one song," noted Ilona of Dagger Eyes after they were done. Here's Mathew!
Oxley sings!
Jesse handles the low end.
Extra Oxley; you've seen him more recently on the blog playing with The Fuzz (now known as No.Negative).
Rhythm section action!
The whole lot!
Floppy-haired action!
The shouty bit!
Onward to a crisp set from Voicemail, who tore through their usual crowd of mod stompers.
Singalong action!
Rhythm section action!
Some Ken!
Closeup action!
Singalong action!
First Base wrapped things up with another tight set; they've expanded to a four-piece since I last saw them at last year's Ottawa Explosion.
This is new chap Connor on second guitar.
Horn-rimmed action!
Singalong action!
Joel sings!
The whole lot!
Swell times. They finished things off with a cover of ABBA's Mamma Mia.
