Lou Barlow struck me as an odd choice to open for Dinosaur Jr., even though he's a member. MV & EE have collaborated with J Mascis so I can see how they'd swing a spot on the bill, and they've been known to make a lot of noise. It wasn't too bad a fit, though once again I could see a few audience members were in a state of perplexity as the quartet rolled out their Appalachian psychedelic drone-folk jams.
Microphone adjusting action with Erika Elder ... and dig that Epiphone Mandobird.
They recruited a couple of Canucks for this show - what they call their Canada Goose Band - here's one 'em, Matt "Doc" Dunn. He was tucked away behind J Mascis' amplifiers out of sight for most of their set. He's well known for his own freaky sound excursions, at least in certain freaky circles ...
Canuck No. 2 is Mike Smith on bass.
And on the far side of the stage, MV himself, Matt Valentine that is, once of the Tower Recordings, and now a man of many recordings with his partner in life and music Erika - seriously, they're kicking at records at an Acid Mothers Temple-ish rate.
Singalong action!
J made a late appearance on drums.
Gripping action!
Harmonica time.
Doc peeks out for some SG work.
Droning action!
EE gets down on the steel.
And a stomping finish.
Their latest album (at the time of this concert, anyway) is also quite good. It's called Barn Nova and is perhaps a bit more rock than their previous stuff.
