Yawning Man came through town back in October 2017 for a cool set at Cafe DeKcuf. They were back to serve up a second helping of desert rock downstairs at Mavericks on a very chilly night in mid-January, along with Virginia Beach's Freedom Hawk, local combo The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol and St. Catherines' thrashers Pisser, who were already through a good chunk of their set when I showed up. Here's Bonez on the mic!
Bass action with Shane!
Christian was playing guitar on the dark side of the stage.
Thrash action!
And so on!
More Shane!
Even more Bonez!
Things changed from thrash to kosmic-egg-cracking with The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol, who by now need no introduction to frequent blog-visitors
Guitar action with Steve!
More Bonez!
Percussive action with Matt!
The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol played next, with some cosmic-egg crackery. Here's Bill and Nate!
John hits!
Guitar action with Dave!
Extra Bill!
Trumpet action with Scott!
Grainy action with Jason!
Symbolic action!
And so on!
Spotlit action!
Krautrocking action!
Virginia rockers Freedom Hawk played a great set; here's mainman T.R. and bassist Mark!
More Mark!
Hair-tossing action with Brendan!
Flying V action!
And so on!
Guitar action!
Even more Mark!
I hope Lenny knows how much we photographers appreciate drummers who light their kits ....
Hawkish action!
More guitar!
The whole lot!
Back-to-back action!
Flared action!
Lucky for Yawning Man fans, the whole group managed to make it over the border this time - here's bassist Mario Lalli, also of Fatso Jetson fame!
Guitar action with Gary!
Bill hits!
More Gary!
Extra Bill!
More Mario!
Even more Gary!
Shadowy action!
Yawning action!
And so on!
A great set from the desert rock pioneers, and everyone else.
