What's the word

On Monday I was at Black Squirrel Books for a mixed bill, starting with the synthetic sounds of Transmit vs. Intangerines (last seen at House of Targ for one of their Switched On Synths nights last month), Peterborough noise duo Deathsticks and Baltimore darkwave combo Curse. Here's some electronic action with Transmit vs Intangerines!

Screen and stage

This was a good weekend for fans of Saskatoon's Shooting Guns - the riff-loving soundtrack sages were in town to play two nights at the Mayfair, performing to F.W. Murnau's classic vampire silent Nosferatu. They followed up with a show at Pressed of material from the other albums and soundtracks, along with a preview of material from their upcoming Another Wolf Cop. I didn't take any snaps at the Mayfair for obvious reasons, but I did catch their set at Pressed, where Cardinal Fuzz labelmates The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol opened things up (it was also an album release for Quality Rolls, their new split with Crab Boat). Here's a slightly smoked Bill!

Birds and Wires

It's that time of year, when Allie Hanlon of Peach Kelli Pop flies north to visit the folks and the city gets a White Wires show. This time around, Ian, Luke and Allie landed at the Happy Goat Coffee Company, with Birds of Paradise providing some super opening sounds. Here's Hannah, her voice is really terrific.

Wicked, dangerous and holy

Saturday I sauntered up Somerset to Bar Robo for some strange hot dogs and hard rock. First up were Bitchin' Wickedz, a no-frills power trio. Here's bassist Dylan!

On to The Dangereens, a really excellent band from Montreal with a deep love for 1970s era Rolling Stones. They've got something of a rough Hellacopters sound with a bit of Tom Petty thrown in, to my ears. Here's frontman Hugo and guitarist Felix!
