It's a sin

Back to Cafe DeKcuf in March for our CMW travelleing circus. West Coasters No Sinner shifted the sound in a blues rock direction with their set. They were pretty amped up.

Reverend action with Eric Campbell!

Share and share alike

I did not plan to be at Mugshots last night for another CKCU fundraising show, but unfortunately my Saturday schedule - and a lot of other people's - was upended when Church of Misery was hit with entry visa problems. Thus, All That Is Heavy 3 was sunk and the Debaser-organized gig at the jail bar became yesterday's entertainment. It was a great lineup, too. I'd heard of both Paul Jacobs and Sharing but hadn't had a chance to see either, and I figured Swollen Eyes would put on a smashing show for their last ever performance.

First up, Montreal duo Sharing. Something about Drew and Oliver reminds me of Billy Bragg (I think it's the vocals), otherwise they're a frenetic artpunk duo.

Windsor artist and one-man psych-racketeer Paul Jacobs was making his first visit to Ottawa; it is a nine-hour drive after all. He has a a well-constructed drum setup so everything's ready to go. If you run you can catch him at Antique Skate Shop at 2 p.m. today.

The lineup was changed since the last time I caught them, so perhaps this is the next iteration of the act.

Dial and donate

If you're a CKCU listener, you're no doubt aware that the venerable radio station is holding its fundraising drive. In addition to frequent breaks to plead for cash, that also means sundry shows around town as various hosts brings out their various faves to raise a few more dollars for a good cause. Last night was the Upstairs Neighbour's turn at the Clocktower, with performances from Liz McDermott of Banditas fame, Neck and Street Meat.

Liz ran through about a dozen songs, including a cover of Fortunate Son (turned into Fortunate One) and a couple of Banditas tunes. This was only her second performance solo.

There was a lot less guitar feedback than when she performed with Scott Terry ...

On to Neck. Here's some introduction action with Neil.
